This is real every day life. We’ve had the opportunity to get to know every one of these kids and many more. We can’t wait to make a difference.
Young brother to John, the boy that could hardly walk because all his toes were eaten up by jiggers, the fact that he has six toes on his left foot; this made it worst still yet a habitant for the jiggers. He looked malnourished, sick and our first intervention was removing jiggers and general health treatment.
First born to a very young father of 18 years, being seen as a shame’ her dad chose to run to the army as a hide out. Today this amazing little girl started her school. She is such an exciting little angel once u meet her.
From a family of 6 girls, Sam is the last born. His father is a farmer garden worker. He quit work after getting a caviar chest injury due to heavy trees he cut down and heavy stone he used to up root in the community. A 46years old father now survives on small casual jobs in the village that could not help Sam continue with school.
From a family of 6, John is from a family among those that over the years have been seen as cursed. This is the reason as to why our first meeting with him, he was eaten by jiggers from his toes to fingers, just like his entire family. We treated the jiggers, sprayed the house and today we are delighted to say there are no more jiggers to this family abandoned by their father and mother, they have been under the care of their grandmother who herself needed help.
First born, of 2 young brothers, whose father abandoned them left them with their mother who struggles to find them what to eat. They live close to their grandmothers’ house that helps taking care of them when their mother goes to the garden to find what to eat. She couldn’t attend school, until recent when we came in to help.
The youngest brother of all, he was the hardest to remove jiggers, screaming as we helped, later he got fever due to many wounds where jiggers were removed. We are proud to say he is a happy boy now studying in the nearby kindergarten.
A brother to Harriet and their other two step siblings, Brian is in his last class of Primary level (P.7), he lost his dad two months ago still wondering whether he will continue with school. Mr, James the one I was moving around with who happen to be his teacher at Badiida Primary school, told me he is one of the best performers in his class.
Namara was born in a family of 2 children Christine is the first born, and at an early age she lost both her parents and later lost her only young brother. She is the last person in her family now living with her uncle and his wife who are also struggling to take care of their own family. She is a very smart, exciting girl who is the head girl at her school. Her best subject in school is Science and she wants to be a doctor in future.
David is a fourth born from a family of 6,after the death of their father leaving them with grandmother. They lack clothes, shoes, cannot afford going to school, eaten by jiggers all over their toes, dressed in torn old clothes, even finding what to eat is a struggle.
Born in a family of 4 children, 3 boys and 1 girl, lost his dad due to HIV/AIDS, now living a hard life with her HIV/AIDS positive mother with his elder brothers. Elijah’s biggest challenge is school the same case with his big brothers; getting school fees and other scholastic materials, despite the fact that for the 3 days I was there, he was dressed in the same clothes, with no shoes.
Born from a family 2 children and other 2 step siblings, Harriet just lost his father 3 months ago, leaving them in with no one to help, their mother had divorced his father one year ago and got married to another man. At her age, she is the mother and father of the house, struggling to find what to eat, and at the moment she says she doesn’t know whether she will go back to school, she is in Senior one, a very bright girl, walking for almost 7 miles to the secondary school daily (to and from) but loves studying so much, according to her words.
“When u see him, u get to see the real Picture of his late dad” says his grandmother, he is like the father and mother of his 5 siblings, he fixs hole that break up in their hut old house ,digs, fetches water, tries to get jiggers out of his young ones, a very hardworking head of the family. Moses told me he is ever the first to wake and the last to sleep at home; he would like to go back to school and his siblings. He narrates their life story with a strong heart and seems to be determined to take care of them as abig brother.
Peter lives with his mother, his father chose to live the rest of his life drinking alcohol, he used to beat miss Viola and she could not stay in such a marriage and came back to stay with her parents. The mother cannot afford to take him to school by now.
Born to a family of 4, Richard is a brother to Elijah, lost his Father to HIV/AIDS, and his mother also is infected and living a very hard life of taking care of her children. Richard is supposed to be sitting for his final exams of primary seven this year 2014 the last class of primary Level.
The last born of the 6 children, she did not get any chance to see any of her parents, her mother died when she was 2 yrs only. She calls her grandmother Mother. And mainly spends her time at the neighbors who give her food.
Born from a family of 2, a boy and a girl, Robert lost his mother due to HIV/AIDS and then his young sister at the age of 4. He now lives with his old grandmother and his aunt suffering from elephantiasis. No one knows anything about his father’s family, his mother never showed anyone who the father of the kids was, however in 2012 a man who claimed to be his father came and visited him from Kampala, he left his telephone contact behind, since then it has never been on, and he has never come back to check on him again. He dropped out of school for two semesters now due to lack of school fees.
Ronald was born to family of 3 children, he lost his father and later his youngest sister also died, he now lives with his grandmother together with his elder brother and their mother working as a gardener in people’s farms to find them what to eat.
Lost her father when she was 9 years, lives in a family with her 4 step siblings, after the death of her dad, her mother got married to another man, who doesn’t no care about her studies at all. She struggles to attain education, ever sent back home due to lack of school fees.
The second born from the family of 6 children, William, David, Samuel, Moses, Rita and him, they are living with their grandmother after the death of their father. They are in total need sleeping in one of the worst houses I came across if not the worst that side.
From a family of 6 children William is the third born whose father died and left him and his siblings with their grandmother, their mother died after the death of their father. They are eaten by jiggers and the grandmother gave a reason of not being able to see them in their toes because of her poor sight.
Kyomya Abraham ia a younger brother of Dennis also living with their mother. Life became very difficult for him and his family after the death of their dad. This caused him also to miss school for two semesters before Yonder started investing in the children’s lives. He is an exciting boy who says he wants to fly air-planes once he grows up.
Kasembo Cissy, the second to last born to this family of 7, is a 6 yr-old girl. Her family lost a very hard working father, whose absence caused them to face a lot of challenges. The worst were thier missing school and surviving on a single meal a day. She is a sister to Dennis, Abraham, and Mary.
Kamara Dennis is from a family of four children plus 3 other older step siblings. Their dad passed away due to HIV/AIDS, leaving them with their mother who could not take good care of them. They survived on a single meal a day from their subsistence primitive farming. Yet the mother’s health has a lot to be desired. We met them at home, having missed two semesters without going to school after the death of their father.
Rumanyika Isaiah is a 6 yr-old boy, the oldest from a family of 3 children. Their father passed on due to a natural death, leaving their mother in a rental house that she could not afford. Eventually they went back to the generational family house of the father’s grandparents to live. Life was hard for their mother taking the children to school, as well as a nearby clinic. It was always a tug of war for her once sickly children, who survived on only local herbs for treatment. We found Isaiah with a chronic cough known as Rubyamira in our local language. Thanks to God he is doing fine now.
Kasembo Norah Mary is the last born of the 7 children. She can hardly remember her late father. She’s very exciting and smart. She has just started school but reports from her teachers are encouraging. She is 4 yrs old and stays with her mother and siblings in a village called Kiko, Kamwenge Road, Fort Portal.
Mpuga Paul’s biggest problem is unceasing flu, says his mom. The day we found him missing school, he was surviving on the little from the garden his mother could gather. He’s a 4 yr-old boy living with his mother also in Kiko village.
